Live, visit and do business in Rio Grande City
On the banks of the Rio Grande, the county seat of Starr County blends deep border heritage, historic architecture and a growing, family-oriented business community.
Rich border heritage
Rio Grande City grew up in the mid-1800s as a river port and trading town, and it remains one of the oldest communities in the Rio Grande Valley. Its families, food, faith and traditions carry generations of Mexican-American and Texan history, and Spanish and English are spoken side by side.
Landmarks worth the trip
- Starr County Courthouse: the brick courthouse designed by architect Stanley Bliss anchors downtown.
- Fort Ringgold: one of the earliest U.S. Army posts along the Rio Grande, with Texas historical markers on its grounds.
- Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto: a beloved stone replica of the grotto in Lourdes, France.
- Historic downtown: brick and stone storefronts, including the Silverio de la Peña Drugstore and Post Office.
Things to do
- Fish and camp at nearby Falcon State Park on Falcon International Reservoir, known for bass fishing and birding.
- Join community events: the city parade, business mixers, expos and seasonal celebrations.
- Eat local: family restaurants, taquerías, bakeries and meat markets run by your neighbors.
- Walk the historic district and discover architecture you will not find anywhere else in Texas.
